Polymateria Has Developed The World's First Biodegradable Plastic That Can Also be Recycled
Polymateria, a new startup company based at Imperial College, London has established an innovative design with the goal of decreasing plastic pollution. Polymateria has invented this new technology that can change the properties of plastic in order to make it biodegradable and recyclable. With this new biotransformation technology, it is able to function and break down plastics safely in the event that plastic breaks out into the environment. They claim to be the first business to supply a fully biodegradable solution without producing microplastics that could hurt the environment or hinder recycling streams at scale. They focus on the plastic waste that is not typically recycled, but commonly disposed of, such as disposable cups and takeaway containers. CEO of Polymateria, Niall Dunne said that the plastic will break down in 226 days for polyethene-based products and 336 days for polypropylene without leaving any microplastics afterward.
