Kellogg's Designs First Fully Recyclable Pouch
Kellogg's Designs First Fully Recyclable Pouch
Kellogg’s San Diego-based granola brand called Bear Naked is now the first fully recyclable stand-up pouch on the market. Kellogg’s designed a recyclable film working with several other packaging suppliers, they developed a new monolayer polyethylene (PE) pouch. It will be made with a food-grade packaging barrier which means that consumers can recycle these bags at 18,000 retail stores across the nation. The PE films made with Retain are approved to use the How2Recycle label by the Sustainable Packaging Coalition (SPC). “I’m really excited about this technology and I’m sure other consumer goods companies are going to start similar projects,” says Shannon Moore, Kellogg’s lead packaging engineer. It should be a huge step in Kellogg’s long term sustainability goals for the future. There are many plastic bags and plastic packaging that can’t be recycled but Kellogg’s has just joined the Film And Flexible task force that works to define, pilot, and scale recycling solutions for the $31 billion dollar packaging company, including plastic film, bags, and pouches. Hopefully, this sustainability move by a large company in the plastic packaging world will spark more sustainability goals within the industry.

Eastman Enters Eyewear Industry with Fully Sustainable Acetate Sheets
Eastman has developed acetate material made from 60% bio-based and 40% recycled material that it will sell to the world’s leader in manufacturing and distributing acetate sheet premium eyewear, Mazzuccheli. Their carbon renewal technology incorporates significant amounts of recycled material and results in a significant reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Vice President and General Manager of Eastman Specialty Plastics says, "Eastman's collaboration with Mazzucchelli demonstrates our ability to leverage groundbreaking recycling technologies that bring innovative and sustainable solutions to the industries in which we participate, we're honored that our long-time partner Mazzucchelli will be the first to produce acetate sheet made from entirely sustainable acetate flake and to divert waste from landfills in the process."
When this new material is used it will offer a sustainable option for Mazzuccheli’s customers without sacrificing performance. Eastman and Mazzuccheli will continue to collaborate on future projects and hopefully set the tone for sustainability within their industries. Read more about their new partnership and developments here.
