Design for America Offers Solutions for Plastic Recycling
Design for America Offers Solutions for Plastic Recycling
Design for America is a national organization that gives students opportunities to be “social innovators”. The students get the chance to design their own solutions for problems that affect their communities. They recently held a design expo where a team of students presented a design for a plastic recycling bin specific to plastic film and comes with a reusable canvas bag. The bin would be easily implemented into the people’s day to day lives and would also have a logo on it to let people know what it is and how to dispose of it. The team was chosen by Proctor and Gamble to go to their headquarters and present their idea and what it would do for social innovation and recycling. What companies are looking for projects like these from students, how the projects will affect the world and how they will address problems facing local communities.

China Bans Single-Use Plastics
Making a huge step in environmental and sustainability efforts, China has announced it’s new policies aimed to restrict the sale, production, and use of single-use plastic products across the entire country. The new policy will not be implemented in its entirety immediately. It will be phased in. Fresh produce markets will be exempt from the ban until 2025 ,and plastic straws and cutlery items for food service and hotels will be phased out under the ban.
Wood Mackenzie senior consultant, William Liu says, “Polyethylene consumption will be impacted as it is the main feed to produce bags and packaging films. But as plastic bags [and] straws are only one application of plastic, it will not have a major impact on the oil industry", China is the largest polyethylene importer in the world where the country consumed more than 33 million metric tons of polyethylene in 2019. The development of substitute material will be huge in this new directive. Plastic has many advantages over paper, glass, wood, and metal but they want to make a change in the environment going forward.
